London SW7 3HG
The Mews House
The Mews House was founded in 2012, and offers a long-term care pathway for London-based clients. Specifically those returning home from first stage rehab, either elsewhere in the UK, or abroad.
We offer evidence-based therapy, supported accommodation and, uniquely in the London private sector, an extended continuum of care that includes residential secondary and tertiary.
Most Mews House residents will be some months into their treatment process and have been referred to The Mews House by a leading primary or secondary rehab. Residents are able to take a lot of responsibility for their recovery. The Mews House will help with the adjustment to life in London, and to feeling properly supported around abstinence, food, and returning to work or education.
Regardless of how long you have been in treatment for, the hard work really begins when you come home to London.
Our philosophy
Our philosophy is that long-term recovery is best supported by long-term treatment close to where you live.
Therefore being located in the heart of South Kensington, we are ideally placed to help London-based clients safely navigate the transition back to their day-to-day lives and home.
At The Mews House, our job is to provide a safe base from which to guide clients through their recovery journey.
The Mews House’s carefully designed therapeutic programmes are evidently 12-Step based. This includes dedicated individual counselling, group therapy, yoga, art, mindfulness. Plus Kirtan chanting, meditation, family counselling, educational workshops, and targeted written assignments.
Indeed our residents are required to be actively involved with our recovery community, especially completing written assignments punctually. Plus attend 12-Step fellowship meetings and permit family involvement.
Our work is done when a client has created the recovery architecture needed to support sustainable and long-term recovery, in their home environment. This will take time.
Treatment package
The treatment package includes a weekly Family Programme for loved ones of our residents. This is an important opportunity for family members to become involved with the therapeutic process. These family members then obtain their own support and education.
Residents will be urine and drug tested every week. Plus all residents are required to be abstinent from mood-altering substances.
Once treatment has been completed, our clients are encouraged to attend aftercare, which is free for life, and held on Monday nights. We also encourage family members to continue attending our weekly drop-in Family Programme.
Most of our elegant triple, twin and single rooms have their own ensuite bathroom, some have access to private decking, equally free Wi-Fi is provided throughout.
Basically there is no better place to consolidate your recovery than The Mews House.
Kendrick Cottage
Founded in 2017, Kendrick Cottage is in a luxury mews house located in Kendrick Mews, in the exclusive London borough of South Kensington. So only a few minutes away from Knightsbridge and the Kings Road.
Carefully designed to support recovery from addiction, Kendrick Cottage offers safe and luxurious residential accommodation, recovery support and counselling. Thereupon some residents may live at Kendrick Cottage and engage with The Mews House secondary or tertiary programmes, though this is not obligatory.
Other residents might use Kendrick Cottage as a safe base while they return to life in London, possibly obtaining bespoke support from external professionals as they do so.
Kendrick Cottage sits in the vibrant Start2Stop recovery community in the heart of central London, hence giving its residents the opportunity to plug into the Start2Stop recovery network.
All bedrooms are large doubles, for single occupancy. There is WiFi throughout, a spacious sitting-room and dining-room with large wall-mounted flat screen TV, and the modern and roomy kitchen is equipped to the highest standards. Evening Programme Overview
The Start2Stop Evening Programme was founded in 2010. At that time, no-one else in the UK properly understood the special needs of people with binge-pattern addictions, and no treatment options beyond residential rehab or individual therapy were available. Unlike many competitors that have tried, and failed, to copy what we do. To this day, Start2Stop remains London’s busiest, best-known and oldest continuously running private sector outpatient programme.
At Start2Stop, we understand that:
- consistently great outcomes are only delivered by long-term treatment programmes
- not all people suffering from addiction, especially people with a binge-pattern addiction, either need or want residential rehab.
Therefore the Evening Programme is specially designed to give people with binge-pattern problems an effective alternative to either individual therapy or residential rehab: an evidence-based 100 day after-hours programme. With group therapy in the evenings and on Saturday mornings, our Evening Programme is very convenient, allowing clients to be scaffolded into recovery without the need to stop working or live away from home.
This means that Start2Stop clients get into recovery in the real world, building strong and robust recovery structures and learning to deal adaptively with London’s myriad temptations and triggers.
Treatment at Start2Stop is affordable, because outpatient treatment doesn’t involve the costs and overheads of residential rehab. This allows a long-term and gentle therapeutic engagement, which, from a clinical perspective, enables structural and deeply embedded problems to be properly addressed and resolved.
Start2Stop is a first-class treatment centre with a proven track record and a higher than average success rate. We believe that Start2Stop is a place where friendships are made and lives are restored.
Most of the team have worked together since 2012, and some of us have been working together since Start2Stop first opened in 2010 — we know what we are doing, and this is reflected in our outcomes.
With an expert and passionate team who are fully committed to each and every client, and proven and convenient programmes that consistently deliver superb results, Start2Stop is the ideal place to begin or consolidate your recovery process.
Daycare
Start2Stop’s Daycare programme has been running from our clinic in South Kensington since we opened in 2010.
Our mission: to do our utmost to help you build a fulfilling and successful life in recovery in London.
Daycare can be a very good option for:
Someone who has completed first stage ‘primary’ rehab (or extended treatment abroad), and is returning to live at their home in London. The client will know they will be vulnerable to relapse. They want professional support, daily structure, individual counselling and a recovery community they can be a part of. The client also wants ongoing help in avoiding relapse and finding their way in recovery in London.
The reality is that relapse doesn’t happen in the very safe and controlled ‘bubble’ of a private hospital or ‘primary’ treatment centre. Instead, studies tell us that relapse is likely to occur within 90 days of returning to one’s home environment.
This is understandable when you consider that the home environment is full of ‘baggage’: people, places, things, expectations, temptations and uncomfortable family dynamics. To return home is also to face up to the consequences of addiction: damaged relationships, possible unemployment, interrupted studies, financial insecurities, and, for some, health or legal problems.
Rebuilding lives ravaged by addiction is an enormous task, made harder by the reality that the support system – friends, meetings, counsellors – that you may have spent several months working hard to build up in your first stage treatment will have been left behind, just when you need it most.
So, at Start2Stop we think that the biggest gift you can give yourself is to allow yourself to be supported back into life in London. With the right scaffolding, we can help you minimise the risk of relapse and build the foundations needed for long-term and sustainable recovery.
Daycare has many advantages:
Non-residential: live at home and come for treatment to our light and airy clinic in a very discreet mews in South Kensington, a short stroll from the tube station.
Effective & evidence-based: research from the US links long-term continuing care to best long-term outcomes.
Fits around life: get well within the context of your own life.
Local: build your recovery network and community where you live.
Flexible scaffolding: as you progress in your recovery, less scaffolding is needed, so you can cut down the amount of Start2Stop Daycare you engage in. As recovery goals are achieved, clients typically progress from our Intensive Daycare programme onto our Daycare programme, attending around three Daycare mornings a week by month 3.
Group, individual and holistic therapies: best practice.
Weekly family support group: best practice.
Alcohol & drug testing: weekly (and sometimes daily, when needed).
Recovery community: we have a thriving community which offers the opportunity to make friends, form connections and nail down your recovery support system.
Helpful for people struggling with depression: treatment at Start2Stop has a robust effect on depression and anxiety. A study involving 182 clients found that successful completion of three months of treatment at S2S led to a 40% reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Cost-effective: Daycare is significantly more affordable than residential treatment. Six months of Start2Stop Daycare will cost approximately the same as one month at a leading private sector residential ‘primary’.
Aftercare: we offer free weekly Aftercare for life. People with Eating Disorders have a separate Aftercare group to clients with substance addictions.
