My experience of residential treatment is mixed, some are ok but most are not. Of those that didnt work for me it was mainly about the staff trying to get me to do things how they needed to do things when they where in treatment. You know the sort, out of treatment on a course straight back working in treatment and no life experience at all, apart from doing treatment. Also wanting me to work through them and not through the group ? I can see now how damaged some of my counsellors where. Eventually I found a place where the counsellors had to have been away from treatment and clean for a minimum of 3 years before being considered for voluntary work. After that they had to work there for a while before being allowed to work alone with clients ( very sensible ) and the main focus was to share my stuff in the group and not in the counseling sessions, these where used for me to explore how I was getting on with it all and what blocks I had etc. Eventually it worked for me, after 7 years of in and out of rehab, I got my connection with a fellowship a sponsor and managed to remain clean by working the program. After being around for quite a while now I can see how damaging some places have been and continue to be so, I just hope they realise that just because someone is a year or two clean does not meen they should be allowed to influence those in very early recovery at all. Its at this stage that clients need to be bonding with each other and getting involved in fellowships ready for treatment finishing. Ideally the centers should be a safe place for clients to begin this journey and a place for processing the difficulties and under lying issues this brings up.
Im not bitter, ha. Good luck to anyone seeking help and do choose wisely, you need this to work for you, not for the staff.
xx
