Tharagay House

Centre Description

Tharagay House is an extended care facility specialising in the treatment of drug addiction, alcoholism, anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating. Our approach is holistic and thus meets the needs of all subsidiary addictions including gambling and sex addiction.

We are a residential facility focusing on clients who have already detoxified and are needing longer care to facilitate the transition from early recovery to long term changes. Our programme is unique in that it caters for residents who are both employed and for those still needing direction.

We provide the opportunity to practise new skills in a safe and nurturing environment.

Tharagay House was established in 1995 and was named in memory of a young woman who died from her addiction.

Tharagay House

We are situated in Kenilworth, Cape Town in South Africa, a minute's walk from the station with easy access to all areas. A 20 bed facility, our emphasis is on creating an environment which simulates life as closely as possible and one in which our clients can practise healthy ways of dealing with their feelings and experiences. We have a proven track record maintaining an above average recovery rate.

Addiction Treatment Programme

Our programme is based on the principles of the Minnesota Model of treatment incorporated with the 12 step philosophy.
Each client is assessed individually and where necessary, especially in the case of dual diagnosis, a specialist will be consulted and form part of the treatment planning.

To that end we offer:

A minimum 1 month programme
A suggested 3 month programme which can be extended for up to 6 months if necessary.

"I had to leave Johannesburg to come into a treatment facility in Cape Town. My boyfriend was in Joburg with me, and as much as we both wanted to get clean, it was impossible. We would eventually just bring each other down. I did a few weeks of primary treatment before they suggested that I went into Tharagay House. "My eating disorder was slowly and surely killing me. I had been trapped in a cycle of starving and purging for 7 years and had wasted away into a very scared, lonely and desperate individual.
