Centre Description
Sunrise Recovery Ranch is a small, intimate treatment center. Unlike many hospitals or institutional settings, we have a beautiful ranch house with a pool outside the sliding glass doors. Situated on acres of rolling greens and a pasture for the Equine Therapy horses, the residents truly feel like they are at home rather than in a treatment center.

Sunrise Recovery Ranch
USA Drug Rehab & Alcohol Treatment ProgramsSignificant life changes take time and hard work. There are no shortcuts, magic or easy ways to overcome the lure of alcohol, heroin, cocaine, marijuana or any other forms of substance abuse. Change involves working through anger, pain, embarrassment, and the fears that ultimately would lead to relapse. From the day they are admitted, our residents begin learning the tools and skills necessary to maintain sobriety.
The 30 day program provides a highly structured and supportive environment. The goal of recovery is long term sobriety. One of the most effective tools of recovery and sobriety is the supportive network of the 12-step programs. With this in mind, individuals also attend 12-step meetings in the community under supervision as well as meetings “in-house” that are attended by persons in the AA community.
Contributing to the process of addiction recovery is our highly skilled staff, many of whom are in recovery themselves and can share their special insights into the healing process. Working as a team, they create an environment within which residents begin to understand, address and recover from a wide range of personal issues affected by the addiction such as family and social relationships, school, work, health, and spirituality.
The Family Program
The Family Program is managed by the main Sober Living By The Sea center and situated in the Corporate Beach House in Newport Beach. The resident participates in the three day program after completion of the initial 30 days at Sunrise Recovery Ranch. However, if there is a need before that time, we will bring the family out at the three week juncture to participate in group counseling.
Sunrise Recovery Ranch also provides residents with a number of 90 day Extended Care options. These include Sober Living by the Sea’s highly acclaimed academic T.E.A.C.H Program, Working Residential, Reflections and its Intensive Outpatient Program.
The core curriculum is based on the following:
Life Skills: These groups focus on day to day social and life skills. As the result of years of alcohol and drug abuse many chemically dependent people have failed to develop successful living skills. These groups enable residents to practice life skills that will facilitate their ability to live sober, successful lives.
Relapse Prevention: Specific techniques are taught on how to live and enjoy a sober lifestyle. The resident learns how to identify individual triggers that lead to relapse and receives help and suggestions on how to come through these situations sober. The focus is on behavior and how to affect positive change.
Treatment Goals: This group promotes consistent individual involvement in their treatment process. Residents identify treatment goals and assess their progress as they proceed through the program. Each week, individual goals will be established and specific techniques for reaching these goals identified.
Group Therapy: These groups provide a forum for residents to resolve underlying emotional issues that may stand in the way of recovery. On an individual basis, specific behaviors, past beliefs and habits are discussed and by using the group process, effective problem solving techniques promote the development of new and productive ways to handle difficult situations.
Anger Management: Current methods of dealing with anger and their outcome are examined. Using the group process, residents learn new and more effective ways to manage anger. Through role play and assignments, they have an opportunity to test and refine their new skills.
What is Equine Therapy at Sunrise Recovery Ranch?
Ranch residents can participate in Equine Therapy at no additional cost.. Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Education (EAGLE) is an emerging field in which horses are used as a tool for emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between a facilitator, a co-facilitator and a horse professional. Because of its intensity and effectiveness, it is considered a short-term or “brief” approach.
EAGLE is experiential in nature. Participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the houses, and then processing or discussing feelings, behaviors, and patterns. This approach has been compared to the ropes courses used by therapists, treatment facilities, and human development courses around the world. But Equine Assisted Growth and Learning has the added advantage of utilizing horses; dynamic and powerful living beings.
The focus is not riding or horsemanship. In fact, all activities take place purely on the ground. It involves setting up activities with the horses which require the individual or group to apply certain skills. Nonverbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking and problem-solving, leadership, work, taking responsibility, teamwork and relationships, confidence, and attitude are several examples of the tools utilized.
Horses are very much like humans in that they are social animals. They have defined roles within their herds and would rather be with their peers. Horses have distinct personalities, attitudes, and moods. The size and power of the horse can be intimidating. Accomplishing a task involving the horse, in spite of these fears, creates confidence and provides interesting metaphors when dealing with other intimidating and challenging situations in life. Those familiar with horses recognize and understand this and also how the horse can influence people in powerful and positive ways. They provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning. Using metaphors, in discussion and activity, is an effective technique when working with even the most challenging individuals or groups.
