Riverview Manor's Therapies

Riverview Manor’s multi-professional staff have the expertise, skills and experience to cater for the unique and diverse therapeutic needs of our clients. Our focus is holistic and integrative and adapted to the needs of our clients. We endeavour to facilitate a process of empowerment that utilises our clients’ strengths, motivation and willingness to recover. Focus is given to the physical, psychological, emotional, social, relational and spritual needs of our clients. We ensure a comprehensive medical assessment, screening and detoxification. The consultant psychiatrist, general practitioner, psychologists, occupational therapist, dietician and professional nurses work together as a multi-disciplinary team.

The team of clinical psychologists have the privilege of walking alongside our clients on the road to recovery. This is a relationship of trust, unconditional acceptance, mutual respect and a working alliance that is encouraged in individual sessions, in which each client is validated as a unique individual. The specific challenges of each client are brought into the individual psychotherapy space with appropriate approaches being applied for specific problems including depression, stress, addiction and eating disorders.

Alongside individual psychotherapy, professionally facilitated group interaction offers a safe and therapeutic space for clients to learn through constructive dialogue with other clients. We have found that the group therapy space can be a profoundly healing experience for many of our clients and has been a space in which our clients can process their recovery.

Dealing effectively with difficulties of addiction, depression, eating disorders and stress takes time, understanding and patience, therefore Riverview Manor offers an intensive four to eight week programme to equip each client with the skills and strategies to manage specific challenges and difficulties. The intensive programme is viewed as a means for clients to gain and practice skills, knowledge and strategies in a healing environment that can be implemented as the client re-connects with his or her life.

Professionally facilitated life skills training is a crucial part of the programme that assists clients in recovery to a functional and more rewarding life. Through developing communication skills, assertiveness and relationship skills, clients are equipped to better deal with stress. By enhancing coping skills, clients who are overcoming addictive behaviour, depression or anxiety difficulties can regain control over their lives and move back into life with new capacities and resources.

A healthy diet and lifestyle are crucial in any programme of recovery and our professional dietician works with individual clients, formulating a specific meal plan for each client where needed. In particular, the professional dietician works actively and alongside clients with eating disorders.

Riverview Manor's Programme

Riverview’s programme is psychotherapeutically based and incorporates the best of traditional and modern approaches.

The focus of the intensive programme is on equipping our clients with life skills vital to a sustained recovery.

Extensive attention has been given to updating the programme to ensure its standard of excellence and to maintain its relevance in changing times.

The Programme

Our therapeutic programme is designed to effectively deal with dual diagnosis.

Our groups are practically orientated, interactive and use small group discussion and experiential learning techniques. This gives our clients an opportunity to share their experiences and to practice new behavioural styles in our safe environment.

There is a focus on interpersonal learning and self-development. Daily group therapy sessions are facilitated and our clients are given thorough exposure to relapse-prevention training.

Individual therapy
Each client is assigned to a psychologist who will see him or her on an individual basis at least twice per week.

12 Steps
A 12-step programme has been adapted from the Minnesota Model, to incorporate not only alcohol abuse, but also drug addiction, eating disorders, depression and stress. It is offered as a tool to help understand why some problems develop, explores the impact that it has on their lives, and to assist our clients in their recovery

Group Therapy
Daily client group therapy is facilitated by two psychologists

Life Skills
By developing effective stress management techniques, assertive communication skills and constructive conflict management strategies we aim to equip our clients with life skills vital to sustained recovery.

Craft
This provides a more relaxed environment for our clients to develop or re-explore their creativity, thus encouraging ways to use leisure time and recreation.

Relapse Prevention
Clients are encouraged to identify the lifestyle changes they need to make to manage their illness. They are encouraged to develop a plan of action on how to integrate these changes into their current home, work and social environment.

Medical Lectures
These groups are designed to educate our clients about the common medical conditions affecting long-term mental and physical health

Reflection
Our clients are given the opportunity to reflect or journal at the end of each day. This is an important tool for integrating what has been learnt that day, and something we encourage for future recovery.

Relaxation
Clients are taught relaxation techniques to counteract the effects of stress on the body and mind.

Lifestyle Management
The dangers of malnutrition through abuse of alcohol, drugs, depression and eating disorders are discussed. Clients are encouraged to invest in their health, making the necessary changes towards a healthier diet and lifestyle.

Psycho-education
Understanding change , family and relationships, cognitive behavioral therapy, boundaries and responsibility groups all assist our clients in developing healthy relationships, making sustained recovery possible.

Spirituality
Academic research shows that this is an important aspect of recovery. Clients are encouraged to explore their spirituality which has often been a neglected area of their lives.

Recreation
Weather permitting, clients are taken to a local picnic area every Saturday. Clients are given the opportunity to hike, fish, tube, swim or just relax in the beautiful surrounds of Underberg. Horse riding can be arranged according to suitability.

Physical Activities
Riverview is equipped with a gym and small swimming pool for hot summer days. We offer early morning walks. Yoga, and Tai Chi exercises are also facilitated.
