Centre Description

Scotland Aberdeen Drug Rehabilitation Alcohol Treatment Centre Residential
The Alexander Clinic provides a specialised treatment programme designed to meet the needs of those who suffer from alcohol, drug and gambling dependence.
Alcoholism and addictive behaviours often have a devastating emotional impact upon families. As part of the treatment, counselling and support groups are available for family members both during and after treatment.

The treatment is delivered by a qualified team of therapists under the supervision of the Clinical Director. The experience of the therapists is complemented by their compassion, empathy and personal understanding.

The programme is designed to help patients live a contented and useful life without the use of any mood altering chemicals.
The programme approach is holistic, addressing the physical, mental, psychological, social, moral and relationship implications of addiction.
The treatment has a structure of changes which progressively develop the total programme philosophy over a six week period.

Patients of The Alexander Clinic include company directors, dentists, doctors, ex-pats, farm workers, housewives, office workers, oil workers, refuse collectors, retired people, road sweepers and teachers - to name only some of those who come to us.

Detoxification

It is usual that patients require to be withdrawn from their addiction using medication under the supervision of skilled medical and support staff.

This is usually a simple and 'clean' process which may be achieved with 7 - 16 days.

The medication used in this modern process produces positive results which are acutely felt by the patient - gone are the days of fearful detoxification. Medication is tapered off during the detoxification process according to progress.

The treatment philosophy recognises that addiction is an illness that is progressive, which can be arrested, and is susceptible to relapse if not properly treated and supportively maintained.

The six week programme is currently accessed by day patient attendance with on-site accommodation available if required.
The foundation laid in treatment is built upon through attendance at free weekly aftercare and support meetings, for a recommended minimum period of two years subsequent to discharge.

Rehabilitation
This is a process of rebuilding in conjunction with the process of change.
Patients learn to:

Accept that they have a problem outside of their own control and its negative implications in their life.
Admit that they need help to resolve their problem, having failed to help themselves. Then to identify the sources from which help is available.
Make a committment to use these resources in order to remain abstinent and develop a better life.
Acknowledge and accept that the primary problem lies within themselves and, through developing self awareness, identify the changes in belief, attitude and values that are necessary to avoid relapse and enjoy recovery.

In this process of rebuilding we address the social problems of addiction and the means by which the patient themselves can make decisions about their behaviour. We work together to create new behaviours which are of greater benefits than the old. In focusing upon the positive development of self evaluation, self awareness, self esteem, problem solving and goal setting, patients may regain self respect in a safe, caring environment.

Aftercare

Everyone is encouraged to make use of the Aftercare facility - although it is voluntary, we consider it necessary for full 'arrestment' of the addiction process.
As we focus strongly on each individual developing self awareness as a base for influencing positive changes, we want to help you continue this process long after your foundation time here.

The Aftercare may involve group sessions, 'one to one time' or even just your presence in a casual way.

We say that; 'If you are having a bad day, have it here - we can help'.

Support

Family Support helps the family to re-adjust to the positive behaviours developed during treatment.

Research has shown that a powerful indicator of success in treatment is the family's attitude and response to the illness. In addiction, your family learned negative patterns from which they too need to recover. Although we schedule regular family involvement, your family may phone at any time - whenever they feel they need our support.

The treatment is a partnership between the professional who delivers the programme and the patient who takes personal responsibility to learn and apply it.
