The treatment is based on a holistic approach, encompassing a range of recovery techniques within a highly developed structure.
The treatment period is a total of twelve weeks.
detoxification
Each client is assessed, and detox medication is prescribed using established methods. The length of detoxification depends on the severity and type of addiction, but will usually be 7-14 days. Treatment begins immediately, during detoxification, and the issues of withdrawals are explored while clients are still experiencing withdrawals so that they may have a greater awareness and understanding of how addiction works.
post detoxification treatment
Two fundamental aspects of arc treatment are:-
a) An important and effective solution to addiction is through conscious awareness of the nature and causes of addiction, and
b) that the counsellors are addicts and alcoholics who are long term clean and sober, and one addict helping another is without parallel in terms of effectiveness.
The treatment is delivered through highly structured 'Schemes of Treatment' with detailed assessment procedures and indicators being recorded throughout. Methods of delivery include a wide variety of multi-media resources, group workshops and activities, and individual work. There are three main stages.
Stage One
In stage one, the nature and origins of addiction are explored from a physical, psychological and cultural point of view. The clients begin to identify which type of addict they are and they begin a process of acceptance of their condition which continues throughout treatment. Aspects of doubt and uncertainty are identified and challenged on a personal basis through a variety of multi-media workshop techniques. Other important issues are also explored such as pay-offs, consequences, how the mind works, reasons for using/drinking and the depth and level of the mental obsession, leading to a realistic client-centred assessment and acceptance.
Stage Two
At the beginning of stage two, clients attend a three-day smoking cessation clinic. The object of this clinic, apart from stopping smoking, is to explore the psychological addiction to a drug that is not mood-altering, thereby demonstrating to clients that addiction to mind altering chemicals also has an extremely large and complex psychological basis. The smoking cessation clinic highlights addiction ‘illusions’ and demonstrates how misguided beliefs are powerful components in all addictions. This leads on to looking at belief systems, religious, psychological and philosophical, and their role in supporting addiction and as solutions to addiction.
The aim is to help clients see how their current psychological conditioning (belief system) has impacted their lives and contributed to their current situation – requiring treatment for addiction. The clients are then guided and challenged into taking responsibility for and changing their belief system to fully support continued recovery from addiction and a life of aesthetic meaning and psychological growth and maturity; acceptance of life on life’s terms and motivations for choosing participation; taking responsibility for psychological and emotional conditions.
Stage Three
Clients are introduced to deeper causes of stress and pain that often motivates craving for mood-altering chemicals as an escape. Causes such as low self-worth; immature perceptions; lack of healthy boundaries; fear; resentment; toxic shame; co-dependency; abandonment, etc. These issues and many more are exposed to clients, and solutions in the forms of recovery activities post treatment are presented.
It is, of course, anticipated that some clients will wish to try to work through deep emotional scars while in the protection of the treatment period. Our response will be to support them through this on a long-term basis which will continue post treatment, rather than trying to solve issues during treatment. This is so that a client does not form the impression that solving deep emotional scars is the answer to their addiction problem. Throughout treatment the condition of and solutions to addiction is separated from the causal and contributing factors, thereby allowing the possibility of long-term solutions for addiction despite issues and set-backs.
It is at this stage that clients will be completing their Post Graduate Strategy so that their recovery can continue post treatment. Practical considerations for recovery post treatment are also addressed, such as living accommodation,
finances etc.
